Are all solar panels environmentally sustainable?
Solar panels are associated with renewable energy and sustainability by default but not all solar panels are made in the same way. Quite often the cheapest products on the market are of inferior quality and their manufacturing process is often harmful to the environment just like a lot of large-scale manufacturing that doesn’t have sustainability as a core principle. Of course, a solar panel should offset and produce more renewable energy than the energy required to make the panel and beyond, and typically this would be the case with most reputable panels.

Adapt Energy visits REC Singapore. What did we learn?
Our recent factory visit provided insights into the state-of-the-art manufacturing standards in Singapore, the phenomenal Heterojunction Technology (HJT) employed by REC, and their unwavering commitment to sustainable manufacturing, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
Cutting-Edge Manufacturing Standards
Singapore has long been a hub for innovation and excellence in manufacturing. As Adapt Energy discovered during their visit, REC Singapore exemplifies these high standards. The facility showcases an environment of precision, quality, and efficiency, with a keen focus on the latest technologies and best practices. REC has invested heavily in creating a manufacturing process that optimises production, minimises waste, and maximises output.
REC’s commitment to quality control is remarkable. Each solar panel goes through a rigorous series of tests to ensure it meets the highest industry standards. The production line itself is a model of efficiency, demonstrating a dedication to delivering top-notch products consistently.
Phenomenal REC HJT Technology
A highlight of Adapt Energy’s visit was the exploration of REC’s High-Junction Technology (HJT). HJT represents a breakthrough in solar panel technology. This innovative approach involves stacking different types of silicon (thin film and N-type) which enhances panel performance and provides the best of both these technologies. REC’s HJT panels offer higher power output, better low-light performance, and excellent temperature coefficient, which means they produce more electricity even under challenging conditions. This technology is pressed and essentially screen printed allowing for zero soldering. This process is carried out at much lower temperatures than traditional panels, requiring less energy and resulting in a very flexible cell. When traditional cells are thermally bonded they become very brittle and micro-cracks form during transportation, during installation, and when under wind pressure once installed. These micro-cracks can lead to dangerous hot spots, arc faults and panels underperforming. Also soldering points on traditional panels can be a major point of failure which is completely avoided with this state-of-the-art technology.
Support bars are a simple and practical addition to REC modules. REC are recognising the importance of mechanical resistance for wind loads which exert extreme pressure on solar modules over their life and can lead to cracks and defects that reduce performance and can go unnoticed.
Industry-leading performance warranty
REC Alpha Panels are guaranteed to not degrade more than 2% in the first year and 0.25% per year after that until year 25. In their 25th year, they are guaranteed to still be producing at a staggering 92%. When you think what the price of power is likely to be in 25 years, still getting 92% performance is going to be a huge financial benefit. REC have the lowest warranty claim rates in the industry and quite rightly refer to themselves as “Solar’s Most Trusted”. After recently being voted the number one panels by Australian installers REC panels are arguably the most secure solar panel investment.

REC’s Alpha Pure series is 100% lead-free and the only Tier 1 panel (at the time of writing this article) that is RoHS-compliant meaning there is no trace of the 10 hazardous, toxic and harmful materials that can have devastating impacts on the environment. It also means recycling the panels at end of life is safer and more practical.
